Dr. Xiaoping Qian is a professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He received his Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor in 2001. He was a research engineer at GE Global Research Center in Niskayuna, NY from 2001 to 2004. He was with the Illinois Institute of Technology from 2004 to 2013. He is an elected Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) since 2015.

Research

His research interests are in the area of computational design, with emphasis on

1) geometric modeling (computer representations and algorithms for modeling geometric shapes of three-dimensional objects),

2) optimal design of multi-physics systems (optimal design of topology, shape and materials in multi-physics systems).

 

Current research activities include isogeometric analysis, computational design of materials and structures, design for additive manufacturing, and digital design and manufacturing.
